Ken Behring and Museums

Ken Behring, founder of the Wheelchair Foundation and a lifelong philanthropist, believed deeply in the power of museums to educate and inspire. His global travels and commitment to improving lives, from delivering wheelchairs to supporting conservation and education, led him to champion natural history and cultural exhibitions around the world.

In 2003, the Kenneth E. Behring Family Hall of Mammals opened at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. This 25,000-square-foot gallery, housing more than 270 specimens, set new standards for immersive exhibition design and interpretation.

Behring went on to support major exhibitions in China, including halls at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Dalian Natural History Museum, and the Beijing Museum of Natural History, among others. These projects brought world-class displays of wildlife, ecosystems, and cultural history to millions of visitors, with a focus on accessibility, interactivity, and education.

His support extended beyond natural history: Behring also helped establish museums of science, culture, and technology throughout China, while sharing his passion for automobiles through contributions like his loan of 62 classic cars to the Shanghai Automobile Museum. Together, these efforts reflect his vision of museums as bridges between cultures and generations.
