Morelos School Pilot Project

The community of Jose Maria Morelos de Pavon (Morelos) is located in the hills above Rosarito, Mexico, one of the country's fastest growing cities. Despite the rapid commercial growth and land development along the coast, the outlying towns continue to struggle to provide basic services to its residents.

The Morelos school system is comprised of four schools with a total 660 students at the kindergarten, primary, and secondary school levels. A local well maintained by the municipality provides water for sanitation needs only. Drinking water which was paid for by the Parent's Association had to be purchased and delivered in five gallon bottles from a water bottling company or trucked in.

The installation, operation and reliability of water treatment, storage and delivery systems allow the school to be much more self sufficient by locally treating and bottling the existing well water, so that it is economically and conveniently available for the students and faculty. Funds from the parents association can now be used for other critical school programs and improvements.

Additionally, the school has the option to sell or give away safe drinking water to local families or organizations within the community, as well as to other schools throughout the municipality. The Water Council, established through this project, decided to provide some excess capacity water, free of charge, to an orphanage located a mile from the school.
