During the twentieth century, the world's population tripled, while water use multiplied six times. According to the United Nations, almost 1.1 billion people have inadequate access to clean water and 2.6 billion are without appropriate sanitation. As a result, approximately 1.8 million people die every year from diarrheal disease, and astonishingly, 90 percent of those deaths occur in children under the age of five.
We must develop a targeted, comprehensive approach to providing safe water to today's children, ensuring that they will not only have a chance to survive, but also to grow into leaders who understand and appreciate the value of public health, sustainable health and economic development, and most importantly, human dignity.
